AMMAN, 5 January 2023 - Jordan ranked 63rd out of 181 countries according to the Government AI Readiness Index 2022, improving its position upward compared to 2021, when it ranked 80th out of 161.

The Government AI Readiness Index, published yearly by Oxford Insights, ranks countries on their readiness to adopt AI in public services based on 39 indicators across three pillars: Government; Technology Sector and Data, and Infrastructure. Its aim is to provide a deeper understanding of the foundations required to integrate AI into public services and, beyond that, using it effectively and responsibly.

According to analysts, the country’s upward progress from 38.26 points to 67.54 points in the Government pillar is attributed to the recent publication of Artificial Intelligence (AI) Strategy and Implementation Roadmap for Jordan (2023-2027). In 2022, UNIDO provided technical assistance to help elaborate the country’s 5-year implementation plan based on 68 projects. This effort raised Jordan’s profile as an upper-middle income country through its prioritization of AI-powered transition to accelerate economic development, attract investment and create sustainable opportunities for employment, innovation and entrepreneurship.

Jordan’s AI Strategy is designed to reinforce efforts to build a robust AI ecosystem. It was first presented in November 2022 at the MENA ICT Forum and is a collaboration between the Ministry of Digital Economy and Entrepreneurship of Jordan (MoDEE), the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), the United Nations Economic and Social Commission (UN ESCWA) and the European Union Delegation in Jordan.
