The New Era of Industrial Policy: Insights from UNIDO’s Industrial Development Report 2024
The session will be opened with a welcome address by Diana Battaggia, Head of UNIDO ITPO Italy. Cristiano Pasini, Director of the Division of Capacity Development, Industrial Policy Advice and Statistics at UNIDO, will present the key findings of the Organization’s (forthcoming) flagship publication The Industrial Development Report (IDR) 2024 entitled “Turning Challenges into Sustainable Solutions: The New Era of Industrial Policy”.
The ongoing global poly-crisis, marked by the lingering effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, a surge in armed conflicts, and escalating climate-induced catastrophes—has exacerbated unemployment, poverty and hunger worldwide. Factors such as population growth, ageing societies and rapid technological advancements are complicating recovery efforts.
The IDR 2024 calls for bold policy initiatives aimed at directing investments towards sustainable industry, thereby fostering both recovery and progress aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It promotes international solidarity, urging nations to rally behind a New Deal for fair globalization and to foster global collaboration in implementing SDG-oriented industrial policies. The report also emphasizes the critical important of enhancing government capabilities and facilitating improved access to financial resources to support such initiatives.
Panel discussion
The presentation will be followed by a keynote presented by Giulio Tremonti, President of the Foreign and European Affairs Committee of the Italian Chamber of Deputies and President of the Aspen Institute Italia.
A panel discussion on the implications of the IDR 2024’s findings, which will include Marco Taisch, Scientific Chairman at World Manufacturing Foundation and Professor at Politecnico di Milano; Anna Cinzia Bonfrisco, Member of the European Parliament, will address important questions such as the future of industrial policy, actions for accelerating sustainable industrialization in least developed countries, opportunities presented by digitalization, and types of support for the transfer of new technologies to enhance circular manufacturing.
Stefano Gatti, Director General of Development Cooperation at the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, will close the plenary session.
