Clean Hydrogen: Ammonium Sulphate Fertilizer from Renewable Hydrogen in Namibia

In an launch event UNIDO Director General Gerd Müller together with Ms. Lindsay Samantha Skoll, Ambassador and Permanent Representative of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland announced the first five demonstration projects to be supported by the UK-funded Accelerate-to-Demonstrate (A2D) Facility . The A2D Facility pilots demonstration projects with innovative technologies for climate action in developing countries.

This project in Namibia leverages the power of clean hydrogen with its Ammonium Sulfate Fertilizer project, based in the Daures Green Hydrogen Village. By harnessing renewable solar energy to produce clean hydrogen, which is then converted into ammonia and ammonium sulfate fertilizer, this project is addressing the dual challenge of reducing industrial carbon emissions and improving agricultural productivity.

Vasco Mushe Samupofu, Permanent Representative of Namibia to UNIDO, stressed the importance of the project, stating that it is part of “Namibia’s current clean energy priorities and ambition to become a green hydrogen hub” and that “innovative projects like this one supported by the A2D Facility can help realize this potential”. This project is not only reducing emissions but also promoting job creation, economic growth and food security in the region. Local agricultural businesses will benefit from the fertilizer produced, boosting productivity and supporting sustainable farming practices.
