Context and objectives
The United Nations Development Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) is organizing the workshop “Ignite the use of biogas towards the achievement of the Paris Climate Goals & SDGs: How to bridge institutional, technological, environmental and economic opportunities and challenges”.
There are well-recognized yet untapped opportunities of utilizing biogas which paves the way for developing sustainable energy systems by maximizing the use of local resources and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. As the biogas technologies are beneficiated from unused and unattended organic wastes, they will contribute for accelerating sustainable and circular development with wide-ranging positive impacts such as maximizing economic values, creating jobs and reducing emissions across multiple sectors including agriculture, livestock, industry, building and transport. However, it is often the case that environmentally sound and climate-friendly management of organic waste is regarded as a challenge, particularly in developing and emerging countries.
UNIDO is working on promoting the use of biogas, including through the implementation of technical cooperation in partnership with the countries across the globe. By facilitating innovative applications of biogas technologies, conducting capacity building, advising and creating enabling policy and institutional framework, as well as developing partnerships and networks across the relevant stakeholders, new opportunities are created in the biogas value chains.
The workshop aims to highlight the roles of biogas and identify effective ways for achieving climate goals while also contributing for the wider SDG targets. For this purpose, the workshop will provide a forum for interdisciplinary dialogue and knowledge exchanges by gathering stakeholders from both public and private sectors engaged with biogas-based solutions.
