“Sustainable industrialization for shared prosperity”
The sixteenth session of the General Conference of the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) was held from 30 November to 4 December 2015, in the Vienna International Centre (VIC), Wagramer Straße 5, 1220 Vienna, Austria. The session was opened in the Plenary Hall of VIC (M building, first floor) on Monday, 30 November 2015, at 10 a.m.
The sixteenth session of the General Conference took place at a crucial moment for the world of international development. In September 2015, the international community adopted the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The inclusion of Goal 9, “Build resilient infrastructure, promote inclusive and sustainable industrialization and foster innovation”, will universalize UNIDO’s mandate of inclusive and sustainable industrial development (ISID) and will anchor the Organization’s role squarely at the centre of the 2030 agenda.
The General Conference was organized under the overarching theme “Sustainable industrialization for shared prosperity” and included a keynote speech by Nobel-prize winner Joseph Stiglitz. Participants of the Conference were also able to actively take part in an industrial development forum (item 9 of the provisional agenda, reference Industrial Development Board decision IDB.43/Dec.9), which incorporated both the fourth UNIDO Inclusive and Sustainable Industrial Development (ISID) Forum and the second UNIDO Donors Meeting.

All relevant General Conference documents, including a schedule of work of the session, are published on the UNIDO website (www.unido.org/gc16). In order to reduce expenditure and minimize the environmental impact through the digitization of conference materials, documents will only be distributed electronically (document IDB.41/5/Add.1, para. 12 refers). Therefore, copies of documents will no longer be provided at the conference venue
